EPARC offers researchers at UCSD and other institutions state-of-the-science services, tools, and resources to conduct physical activity and exercise-related research. We conduct any or all phases of a research project, from study consultation and design to recruitment, data collection, data analysis and algorithm generation as necessary. Researchers who study physical activity and physical function related to health and prevention of chronic disease in populations ranging from young to old, healthy to diseased, and deconditioned to highly fit, can benefit from our services.
Physical activity is a complex behavior that includes several components, which should be addressed prior to measurement as an independent, moderating, or dependent variable in health-related research.
Factors to be considered in the selection of physical activity intervention and measurement methods include: experimental goals, type and duration of physical activity, the dimensions of physical activity that are of health interest (e.g., cardiovascular, strength, flexibility), sample size, size of the study, frame of reference (e.g., prospective measurement vs. assessment of past activity), cultural, social and environmental factors, and burden on the research budget.
EPARC research staff can assist you with the collection of physical activity data for your research. EPARC staff members are trained in all aspects of the data collection process, including participant scheduling, participant follow-up, data collection, and data entry. All staff are also certified in a variety of anthropometric measurements, and are skilled in using EPARC assessment tools and platforms. By using trained EPARC staff to collect your physical activity data, you maintain the integrity of your data while reducing the cost and burden of hiring and training additional members of your research team.
EPARC staff have years of experience processing and analyzing subjective and objective physical activity data. EPARC offers data processing and interpretation as a service to researchers who are either unfamiliar with the data output or would like assistance with expediting the data analysis process.
EPARC has instruments to measure functional capability and physical activity that can be rented for data collection. Renting equipment is often much more cost effective than purchasing new equipment that may never be needed after the completion of your study.

If you would prefer to use your own project staff rather than hire EPARC staff for data collection, EPARC is available to train your research team on proper protocols for collecting usable, valid, and reliable physical activity data to meet quality control standards. Training is also offered for data cleaning, processing, and analysis.
